In May we we re informed that The Invaders: Genesis was accepted to the New York International Independent Film Festival. At this point we are only 3 weeks away and as excited as we are, we're going crazy getting everything organized for the trip.

Exciting news! The Invaders: Genesis is to be shown in New York city this coming July!
We got word that the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival accepted the film with "flying colours". No word on the exact day it will be screened but we'll be down there, promoting, networking, and having fun as we hope this is the first of many festivals Genesis will be shown at :)

Looking back...The Challenge.

Heyyy, look what we got!

Actually it's funny...we submitted The Challenge to the Barrie Film Fest at the very last minute because we were still in the process of shooting Genesis. We weren't able to attend the festival because we were traveling to Niagra area to shoot an epic fight scene! It was unfortunate that we weren't there to accept the award for our film but it's nice to know people enjoyed it.

While we're on the subject, I feel like looking back to The Challenge...
Although it's not actually classified as a "Reel Film", it was definitely a stepping stone in our progress. The 10 minute short was put together for my University thesis project where I chose to deconstruct the action genre, and by doing so I would create one myself to see why action films are made the way they are.
So I researched the most popular type of action sequences and came up with: a dirtbike chase, a gun battle, and a sword fight...to the best of our abilities. With each sequence we had to choreograph, rehearse, and shoot all the action based on our own knowledge. But I had two awesome guys who were willing to do anything to do it right! After eight months of production we finally had our masterpiece...only to have it totally shot down by the professors at my University, stating that it looked "too Hollywood"...I'm guessing they didn't get where I was going with this.
Anyhow, I stuck to my original plan because I believed that what I had created was true to my research, even if it meant sacrificing part of my grade....which it did.

But who cares? I passed, and I got second place at a film festival because I stuck to my vision. The lesson here kids: don't let anyone change your vision, you created it, it's yours!

ANOTHER screening for Genesis

We're doing it again, that's right!
Genesis is getting a third screening because of the high demand for the film. It will be shown at AMC respectively on February 6th @ 7PM.

Genesis Movie Premiere

On Sunday January 10th, 2010 we premiered our tenth film (did you make the connection yet?). The night was nothing short of a huge success because of the support we get from our fans. Having two shows back to back with an attendance of about 550 people in total, including representatives from production companies as well as local media, it's safe to say that this was our most successful screening to date. Happy new year! Unfortunately I haven't had time to post that much thanks to the upcoming film premiere which is only 3 days away...wow...anyways, I thought I'd post the latest news from Reel Films...literally!

Local paper Vaughan Citizen has done a story on our 6 year progress making films out of our own pockets, which is nice to acknowledge. We're very happy with the story they did on us, and if you live in the area check it out!

Looking back...One Night

I feel that One Night is appropriate to look back on today because it's new years eve, which is when the movie takes place!
Two friends plan an intimate new years party to impress some girls but their plans are wrecked when an unexpected guest arrives...uh-oh!

This film is based on a play I wrote in high school called Open Your Eyes, which was entered into the school's drama festival and won nine awards. Originally written as a film, at the time I didn't have the experience to tell the story that way so I changed it to a stage play, only to be re-written as a film once again four years later. This was one of the best experiences I've had working on a film because not only did we shoot the whole thing in one location, everyone in the cast was great to work with! It seemed every night we filmed was a little party of our own and we always had a good time.

Another reason why this film is so special is because it was our first big premiere. On July 27, 2007 we screened One Night in front of a sold out theatre of 250 guests. It was a great turn out and it made us realize the potential Reel Films had to a broader audience.

On top of that it was entered into the YoungCuts Film Fest in Montreal in 2008. One Night will always be special to me, even more than I intended because of the people who were involved...happy new year!

Looking back...Watching Mikey

From where we are now I think it's important to see where we came from, which is why every now and then I'll post some info on our past projects. Starting with Watching Mikey, probably our most successful...and most simple film to date. This short ran for 20 minutes and was written in just one night as part of a test run for a new genre we wanted to try; comedy. The film was completed in early 2006 after it was pretty much in production throughout the Christmas holidays. Here's the poster:

Later that year we submitted the film to the New York Independent Film and Video Festival: hosted in Los Angeles. Here's what happened...

A few months later we submitted to the Reel World Festival here in Toronto:

The film has been offered distribution and still gets a good response wherever we screen it. Watching Mikey has definitely been a landmark in our six year run and regardless of it's simplicity, it's a film that will be hard to forget.

Genesis World Premiere

January 10, 2010 will be the world premiere of our first feature, The Invaders: Genesis. This story follows a small group trying to survive in a town 3 years after a nuclear world war, filled with action and drama, the film took us a full two years to produce. Finally, audiences will get to see Reel Films' newest creation showing at AMC Theatres in Vaughan, Ontario.

Our show starts at 4PM, but since we sold out and have such a high demand for tickets, we've added a second show at 7PM!

In 2003 a group of students came together to produce a short film using their home video camera, their parents' house, and money out of their own pockets. Since then this group has evolved and accomplished ten films of all genres, showing their work in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Los Angeles. Along the way, Reel Films took several awards including: Best Children's Award at the New York International Film and Video Festival, Top five in a Pepsi commercial contest at the YoungCuts Film Festival, and recently took second place at the Barrie Film festival. On January 10, 2010 they will premiere their tenth film at AMC theatres in Vaughan, Ontario.
